(Scottish, 1883-1959)Barcarolle (H. 233), No. III, signed lower right, "James McBey", signed and inscribed lower left in plate, "James McBey, Venice, September 1925", signed also by Martin Hardie, etching on light blue-green paper, plate 14-7/8 x 8-1/4 in., sheet 16-3/4 x 11 in.; modern black frame, 24 x 18-1/2 in. - Note: James McBey's etchings gained popularity along with Whistler's in the early 20th century, setting him apart as one of Scotland's greatest etchers. His Venetian scenes remain the most desirable. This copy, titled for the song sung by gondoliers, was formerly in the collection of Martin Hardie who was both a friend and author of the book, Etchings and Drypoints by James McBey.
