Title: An Expedition to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah: Including a Description of its Geography, Natural History, and Minerals, and an Analysis of its Waters; With an Authentic Account of the Mormon Settlement...
Author: Stansbury, Howard
Description: 487 pp. 57 lithographic plates, including 3 folding and approximately 30 tinted, one small folding map bound in. Atlas volume containing the two large folding maps not present. (8vo) 23.5x15 cm., early black half morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. First English Edition (presumably from the sheets of the Philadelphia edition, with a new title page).Stansbury's important exploration of the Great Salt Lake Basin and his report on the newly established Mormon settlements, as well as the routes and passes through the Rockies for emigrants and possibly a railroad. The lithograph titled "East Side of Stansbury's Island" not present, a second copy of the plate "Gunnison's Island and Station, from the North" bound in its place, presumably an error made at the time of publication. The English edition is quite uncommon with no copies appearing in the auction records for at least 30 years. Graff 3947; Howes S884; Sabin 90371; Wagner-Camp 219:1 (for Philadelphia edition).
