Description
Lot of three 11 x 9 inch lithographs of early Northern California. Labeled at upper left "U.S. P. R. R. Exp & Surveys Cal." Lithographer was T. Sinclair of Philadelphia. The three scenes are: Entrance of Livermore's Pass, View of Benicia From the West, and U.S. Military Post Benicia. Ragged bottom edge, probably removed from a bound volume, circa 1850s. Thomas Sinclair, born in 1807 in the Orkney Islands (Northern Scotland), was one of the premier Philadelphia lithographers of the 19th-century, particularly in the field of chromolithography. In addition to chromolithography, Sinclair became particularly well-regarded for his illustrative work and received several commissions for illustrations for government, scientific and medical publications throughout the mid 19th century.Date: Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance: Salvatore Falcone Collection
