Known as N. Currier and Currier & Ives (1834-1907), the firm published over eight thousand different titles during its existence. Nathaniel Currier founded the firm in 1834 after purchasing John Pendleton's assets in New York City. James Merritt Ives became a partner in 1857, after which the publication line changed from N. Currier to Currier & Ives. The firm was so synonymous with American culture it was referenced in the Christmas jingle "Sleigh Ride" in 1950, just over four decades after it shut down.
