Item Details
Description
Dimensions: 15.5in H x 8.875in W x 5/8in D

Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty Period, Gilt bronze double gourd wall hanging plaques. The gilt bronze carved in flattened double gourd shaped body, slight thick gilt bronze resemblance, with two bulbous bellies conjoined together, raised on upper with free ring to wall hanging plaques. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in Gilt underglaze base color which contrast against the colorful enamel inlaid. Finely Casted Gilt Bronze highly carved in detail with two medallion, with lower body medallion is bogger than the upper medallion. The medallion shows the word in iron-red "DAJI" on both bulbous gourd body, interspersed with eight buddha Daoist emblem and numerous thick point, all in vivid tone color enamel. Red ribbon banded on the waist. Each bulbous body decorated with orange-red peach shaped cartouche enclosing the gilt over glazed inscriptions. Double-gourds are also one of the symbols of longevity or immortality. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that one of the Eight Daoist Immortals, Li Tieguai is usually depicted carrying a double- gourd in which he carried medicines. Indeed, there are many stories about double-gourds from which magical potions or creatures appeared, in addition to which gourds were believed to be able to absorb all evil vapors, safe-guarding those who carried them. The double gourd also represented a door through which certain people with miraculous powers could enter a parallel paradise. The colors are harmonious, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye.
