Description
Fantastic historical pair of Western Union telegrams sent on Dec. 4 and 5th, 1907 from President Teddy Roosevelt to Nevada Governor John Sparks. 1) Dec. 4th. Roosevelt at White House to Gov. Sparks: "The federal government is prepared to send detachment of troops at any moment..." "I have ordered not to exceed two companies to be ready to move immediately..." 2) Dec. 5th. "I have received your request for troops made in accordance with the constitution and laws of the United States and will accordingly immediately dirrect [sic.] that a sufficient number of troops be sent to Nevada. The number must be determined by the military authorities." These telegrams were not present in the Sparks archive that FH worked with. The deployment of troops to Goldfield was a result of the 1906/1907 labor disputes between the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and the mine owners and businessmen. Troops arrived from San Francisco on Dec. 7th (two days after the second telegram). Mine owners cut wages, and Roosevelt was worried that withdrawing the troops would lead to violence from the miners. A special meeting of the legislature was immediately called and the Nevada State Police was organized. On March 7, 1908, the last federal troops were withdrawn. 3 & 4) Two bonus Goldfield items: Goldfield Cons. Mines Co. stock, 1934, and Goldfield Deep Mines Co. of Nevada postal card (1932) regarding meeting._x000D_
