Stansbury's Great Salt Lake 1852, w/maps bound in

Lot 0247 Details

Description
Heading:
Author: Stansbury, Howard
Title: Exploration and Survey of the Valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah...
Place Published: Philadelphia
Publisher:Lippincott, Grambo & Co.
Date Published: 1852
Description:

487 pp. Illustrated with 53 lithograph plates, 34 of which are either colored or tinted (3 of those are folding panoramic views), a folding map by Lahonton, 19 are of various regional flora and fauna; 2 large folding maps have been bound in at the rear rather than in separate folder. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (8¾x5½"), rebound in modern half leather, marbled boards; new endpapers. Senate Issue. First Edition.

Stansbury's important exploration of the Great Salt Lake Basin and his report on the newly established Mormon settlements, as well as the routes and passes through the Rockies for emigrants and possibly a railroad. Wheat describes Stansbury's explorations in detail, and says his Map of the Great Salt Lake permanently established the topography and many of the place names of northwestern Utah. Wagner-Camp notes "59 plates listed on pp. [11]-12," but there are actually 58 listed, and one of these is the map by Lahontan. Additionally the plates from the Paleontology section are lacking. The two important large folding lithographed maps with hand-coloring have been bound in the rear: "Great Salt Lake and Adjacent Country..." (measuring 109.7x75 cm or 43x29¼"); "Reconnoissance between Fort Leavenworth...and Great Salt Lake" (measuring 73x171 cm, or 28x67"). Field 1940; Graff 3947; Howes S884; Sabin 90372; Wagner-Camp 219:2; Mattes Platte River Road Narratives, 634, 974; Wheat, Transmississippi 3, Maps 764 & 765.

Condition
Touches of wear to binding; a few small dampstains and instances of foxing throughout, maps have stub and edge tears, light creasing and foxing, faint toning and some tears along folds as well as minor tape repairs, no loss; very good.
