Description
**First Time At Auction**

George Edwards (British, 1694-1773). "The Pheasant of Pennsylvania" and "The Touraco" - hand colored copperplate engravings. Ca. 1755. Printed for J. Hinton, Newgate Street (London). Published in the "Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure" between 1747 and 1799. George Edwards was an accomplished British naturalist and ornithologist who was dubbed "the father of British ornithology". Edwards travelled extensively throughout Europe studying the natural environment and creating beautiful hand-colored drawings of animals, especially birds. In 1733, he was appointed the librarian to the Royal College of Physicians. Size: Pheasant of Pensylvania measures 7.5" L x 4.5" W (19 cm x 11.4 cm); 15.125" L x 11.5" W (38.4 cm x 29.2 cm) framed

Provenance: private Palm Springs, California, USA collection; acquired prior to 1965

Neither has been examined outside the custom framing. However, both appear to be in very good condition save expected slight toning. Colors and imagery are vivid.
