Robert L. Benney (1904-2000) American. Lynn Harding as Macbeth. Ink & ink wash, Chinese white. 13 5/6 X 9 1/8 in. image size. Signed lower right: Benney/L.R. Stamped lower left: HERALD TRIBUNE. Robert L. Benney was a civilian correspondent during World War II whose work during both wartime and peacetime made him a nationally renowned artist and illustrator. He first exhibited his theatrical drawings in 1933 at the Museum of the City of New York. His work can be found in the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Society of Illustrators in Manhattan. Lynn (Lyn) Harding (1876-1952) was a British stage actor who specialized in villainous roles on stage, silent screen and in talkies, appearing in such films as When Knighthood Was in Flower (1922; as Henry VIII), The Speckled Band (1931) and Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939).
