German .800 Silver "Rocaille" Dessert/Fruit Set
Item Details
Description
Good German .800 Silver Thirteen-Piece "Rocaille" Dessert/Fruit Set, the pattern introduced in 1891 by M. H. Wilkens & Sohne, Bremen, retailed by court jeweler Nikolaus Truebner, Heidelberg, including a large serving dish, h. 5-3/4", w. 9", and twelve individual dishes, h. 2-3/4", w. 4", each modeled in the form of a well-textured rococo shell with an up-scrolled acanthus handle, the serving dish with three cast rococo scroll feet, the individual dishes with gilt interior and circular shell foot-ring, 43.21 total t. oz.
Condition
Overall Condition: Very Good. An attractive and well-detailed set with no dents or breaks noted. One of the small dishes has some very tiny (less than 1/4") professional repairs (probably done by the manufacturer) on the edge to correct some minor splitting along the rim. Otherwise excellent. Gilding good. (Note that the large dish is not gilded on the interior.) Marks: (on the underside of the foot of the large dish and the rim of seven of the small dishes): 1) the German post-1888 "crown & moon" reichsmark, 2) the fineness "800" and 3) the Wilkens "printing press" trademark; the large dish additionally with model number "88786" and the "Truebner" retailer's mark. (Five small dishes unmarked but clearly of the same date and as the rest of the set.)
