Description
Civil War Prints
Confederate States President Jefferson Davis's Escape Dressed as a Woman Cartoon Print by Currier & Ives
1865-Dated Civil War Era, Engraved Political Cartoon titled, "The Last Ditch of the Chivalry, or a President in Petticoats.," Published by Currier & Ives, New York, Very Fine.
This wonderful and dramatic Engraved Political Cartoon measures about 16.5" x 12.25". There is a fine hidden 2" tear at lower right edge, not affecting the image with archival tape repairs on the blank reverse. Part of a series of similar cartoons ridiculing and celebrating the capture of Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis. The image shows a running Davis dressed as a woman carrying a bag of gold and a knife with a group of Union soldiers chasing him, and an angry Southern woman yelling at the soldiers (possibly Varina Davis). Each figure has a text comment balloon above. Faint stamp at upper center of "Thos. Hastings News Depot. Museum Building Albany". A great historical Currier & Ives Political Cartoon.
