Item Details
Description
Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. late 4th to 2nd century CE. A mold-made ceramic votive figure of rare form, featuring a man holding the arm of a small child standing beside him. Depictions of women with children and children alone are fairly common from the Hellenistic period, but men with children are much rarer. Votive figures of children are most frequently found in sanctuaries dedicated to healing or protection, giving us a poignant idea of what the adults who placed them desired. Size: 2.95" W x 6.45" H (7.5 cm x 16.4 cm); 7.05" H (17.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
