GERMAN METTLACH VILLEROY & BOCH CERAMIC STEIN, mold number 1397, having etched sides with central vignette of man in hat, ceramic inset metal lid, 1/2 liter size. Impressed mark of "VILLEROY & BOCH / PATENT / METTLACH" with additional numerals. Fourth quarter 19th century. 7 1/4" HOA.
Area of restoration along rim with repaired chip, area of restoration and hairline along side under handle, handle with manufacturing hairlines to terminals, scattered flakes.
Literature: Mold number 1397 as Kirsner - The Mettlach Book, second edition, p. 58.
Provenance: From the Carlton Cotting estate collection, Vienna, VA.
