Hunt Slonem (American/Louisiana, b. 1951)

Lot 0099 Details

Description
Hunt Slonem (American/Louisiana, b. 1951), "Primary Butterflys [sic]", 2005, oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated en verso, signed on stretcher bar, 85 in. x 90 in., unframed. Note: In the monumental canvas offered here, Hunt Slonem depicts a swarm of butterflies manifested by a frenzied grid of movement and color. Every wing seemingly flutters while paradoxically remaining frozen within Slonem’s iconic crosshatched texture, an immediately recognizable structural device that runs through much of his œuvre. The colossal scale of the painting invites the viewer to immerse himself in Slonem’s contemplative, almost meditative world. As Dominique Nahas writes, “Slonem captures on canvas the elusive and fragrant life essence, a rare specimen known commonly as the here and now, the eternal presentness of the moment.”
Ref.: Kuspit, Donald B. Hunt Slonem - An Art Rich and Strange. New York: Harry N. Abrams, 2002. Nahas, Dominique. The Worlds of Hunt Slonem. New York: The Vendome Press, 2011.
