“Jeff’s Last Shift” 1865 Civil War Currier & Ives Print
1865-Dated Civil War Engraved Currier & Ives Print Titled “Jeff’s Last Shift,” measures 16.5” x 13”, Choice Extremely Fine.
This Currier & Ives Lithograph Print is titled, “Jeff's Last Shift.” It is a cartoon style satire on Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who had allegedly been wearing his wife's shawl in disguise when captured. Here his daughters (he only had one) plead, "Please let my old mother go to the spring for some water to wash in?" An amused Union soldier lifts the president's skirt to examine his large boots, while another scoffs "President!! Who is he President of?" This bold vivid sharp Print has two trivial short sealed edge splits. Published by Currier & Ives, New York, 1865. An excellent example for framing and display. Scarce and highly popular in its Political and Patriotic historic content.
