STEVENS AND WILLIAMS POMPEIAN SWIRL / VERRE DE SOIE VASE, cased light blue to lavender, gourd form with a opaque pale yellow interior, polished pontil mark. England. Circa 1886. 8 7/8" H.
Undamaged with a hint of exterior wear.
Literature: Parallels Hajdamach - English Glass: 1800-1914, p. 316, pl. 38 / top right.
Provenance: From a New Jersey private collection.
Catalogue Note: Pompeian Swirl glass and vases were first developed by Frederick Carder (later to be the innovative head of Steuben Glassworks, and one of the most influential glass artists of all time) in 1886, while working for Stevens and Williams. Carder decided to call this type of glass "Verre de Soie." Stevens and Williams registered Verre de Soie glass in 1886.
