Three-tone lithograph on white wove paper, being the top half of a pictorial lettersheet. Drawn by Moody from a sketch by Swann, lithographed by Peirce & Pollard. 15x21 cm (6x8¼").



Rare three-tone lettersheet view of San Francisco, formerly the property of Henry Clifford, described in the catalogue for the sale of his collection as the only three-tone lithograph in the Clifford collection. Early view of the bustling town, soon to be a great city, with sailing ships and grounded store ships in the harbor, wharves, buildings, etc. The artist, James Gilchrist Swann (1818-1900) of Medford, Massachusetts, worked as a ship chandler before coming to California in 1850. This view is similar to Baird 316 with color variant and reworked by the artist, with only the legs and feet of artist visible on the hill at left.

Condition
Backed with heavy Japanese tissue, trimmed without loss of image, worn at old folds, some soiling. Good.
