Loss of the Amistad Slaves - Historical U.S. House of Representatives Report, Buchanan Hopes to Repay Spain!
November 20, 1860-Dated Pre Civil War, Amistad Slaves Related, Autograph Letter to President James Buchanan, Signed “Danl Bucke,” Choice Extremely Fine.
Important Autograph Letter report from U.S. House of Representatives employee Signed by Daniel Bucke written, “To the President of the United States (James Buchanan), 1 page, 8” x 10”, on beautifully illustrated House of Representatives letterhead. Mailing folds with a tiny split at center, else very clean boldly written and very nice in eye appeal. Here, Mr. Bucke advises that he has examined the journals of the House of Representatives and its reads, in part:

“...relative to the slaves on board the Spanish brig Amistad and find that the Senate passed an amendment ... ‘For the appropriation and extinguishment under the direction of the Secretary of State, of the claims of the Spanish government against the United States, recommended in the President’s message, fifty thousand dollars’ This amendment was rejected by the House and the Senate receded therefrom ...”.

Along with Presidents Polk and Pierce, Buchanan was a staunch advocate of paying Spain the $28,000 claimed by that country for its loss of the slaves. However, President Buchanan’s motivation was more likely driven by appeals from Southern slave owners who sympathized with the Spanish for their loss of “property.”
