Hans Purrmann (1880 1966)
Hans Purrmann was born in Speyer. In his father's painting business, he first learned the art of painting and later attended the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe. From 1900 to 1905 he studied at the Art Academy in Munich under Franz von Stuck and Gabriel von Hackl. Despite initial artistic success in Germany, Purrmann moved to Paris in 1906 where he met Henri Matisse. He was his teacher and friend and helped him to find his own style. Back in Germany, Purrmann fled from the Nazis to Florence in 1935, where he became head of the Villa Romana. In 1943 he had to flee again from Italy and found a new home in Montagnola, Switzerland, in 1944. Hans Purrmann exerted a great influence on many younger painters. He received many honors and awards, among others, in 1964, the great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with a star. (fea)
