Description
A RARE AND LARGE BLUE AND WHITE TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER, CHINA, MING DYNASTY,WANLI PERIOD (1573-1620) - The base inside is left unglazed. In good condition only very small fritting and very small areas of unglazed areas. - 21,2 cm diam., 18 cm high - Strongly potted rising from a flat base to the slightly tapered cylindrical body with three applied feet, in the form of molded Buddhist lion heads with the King character Wang on their forehead, painted in under-glaze blue on the exterior with a continuous scenes of a rocky garden with alternating scholar and attendant in a fenced garden, either seated playing chest or standing on a hilltop beneath plants rocks and clouds, all below a raised rib beneath a band of Y-diaper enriched with three panels enclosing flowering branches, separated by three ruyi scepter, the upper rim with raised band of key-fret, the top flattened in-turned lip with a motif of flower heads and foliage. - - Note: for a related tripod-censer see University Museum and Art Gallery The University of Hong Kong 'The Flame of Flame' Imperial Wares of the Jiajing and Wanli Periods, Edition October 2009 pl.102 pp.262.
