Description
GERMAN STONEWARE PEWTER MOUNTED TANKARD STEIN, salt-glazed, the straight-sided body with two bands of turned concentric bands, above white and cobalt blue applied relief enameled flowerhead and floral band borders, centering a panel of scrolling foliage and flowerhead, on the orange-brown body, with ball-form thumbrest to lid, incised FM over entwined leaves. Unmarked. Attributed to Altenburg, Germany. Circa 1680-1720. 10 1/8" H.
Provenance: From a Virginia estate collection.
Condition
Moderate condition, with a hairline crack running vertically through the body, the thumbrest is slightly damaged toward the handle. Despite its problems, of attractive appearance.
