FREDERICK SCHILLER COZZENS (AMERICAN, 1846-1928) MARITIME PAINTING, watercolor and pencil on paper, depicting a sailboat heeling over in a strong wind, steam boats and other vessels in the distance, signed and dated lower left. Professionally matted and housed under glass in an old molded giltwood frame. Circa 1896. 14 1/2" x 21 3/8", 24 7/8" x 31 7/8" OA.
Catalogue Note: Born in New York City, Frederick Schiller Cozzens (1846-1928) became an important marine artist and illustrator in his lifetime, producing works for several books on maritime subjects, "Harper's Weekly", and other magazines. At the turn of the 20th century, he turned more towards private commissions and painted a great variety of sea craft for clients. His work today is included in the collections of the Peabody Museum, the Mariner's Museum, the New York Yacht Club, and the US Coast Guard Academy, among others.
