Description
Arthur Frank Mathews San Francisco, CA 1860 - 1945 Allegory of Music; Music Cabinet oil on panel -three panels Cabinet: 39 1/8 x 23 1/8 x 23 1/2 inches; Front panel: 16 3/4 x 17 5/8 inches; side panels ea. 16 x 5 inches Private collection, Northern California This cabinet was originally in the music room of "Arbor Villa." the Oakland, California mansion of Mr. & Mrs. F. M. Smith. Mr. Smith was commonly known as the "Borax King" as he made his fortune by creating and marketing the product, "20 Mule Team Borax." he built his mansion in Oakland where he engaged the services of architect Walter J. Mathews for the design of this important structure. Arthur Mathews (his brother) was subsequently hired to decorate the home with mural work in the major rooms and paintings on selected pieces of furniture. The photos of the music room are found in a photo album of Arbor Villa in the collection of the Oakland Library History Room (reprinted here with their permission) and clearly show the top and legs of this cabinet in its original location behind the related piano, which has identical putti carved elements (see details). In very good original condition. This piece is to be included in the forthcoming publication on Arthur Matthews being prepared by Mr. Harvey Jones, Senior Curator of Art at the Oakland Museum of California. We are grateful for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
