This service originates from the German tradition porcelain manufactory Rosenthal. 50 pieces of the form “Berlin”, with the design “Petruschka” compromise this service for 14 people. The service consists of the following single pieces: two serving platters, one terrine with lid, one bowl, 15 dish plates, 14 soup bowls with saucers, and one saucier. The form “Berlin” is a very clear geometrical form, with softly rounded corners. The lid of the terrine is slightly vaulted and the knob is of stalk-like shape. The printed design “Petruschka” sticks out because of the organically formed semi-abstract figures in colourful paint, who are dancing around joyfully in swinging skirts. In the high-quality, partly gilded background are some tents. Green fields, colourful flowers and birds adorn the porcelain pieces additionally.
Every piece holds the maker’s mark Rosenthal with the text “Artist-Collector-Series ‘Petruschka’ Björn Wiinblad on the form ‘Berlin’ by Hans Theo Baumann, Rosenthal Studio-Line” in German language underneath. The service is in very good condition, with age-related signs of wear and use like minimal surface marks. The height of the terrine is 17 cm, and the serving platter is 33.5 cm in diameter.
Björn Wiinblad (1918-2006)
Björn Wiinblad was a Danish painter, designer and artist in ceramics, silver, bronze, textiles and graphics. His work are exhibited in many museums worldwide. He was the creator of poster designs for the American Embassy in Paris in 1947, which made him famous. Later, his posters illustrated the famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. He created costumes for numerous ballets. Wiinblad was an essential designer for Rosenthal, the traditional German porcelain manufacturer.
The porcelain manufacturer was established in 1879 as a family business by Philipp Rosenthal. Rosenthal is known for pioneering efforts in product design and worldwide success in design shops. Through collaborations with designers and artists, an impressive line of products arose - today seen as classic pieces.
