Description
EXTREMELY RARE J. EBERLY & CO. (ATTRIBUTED), STRASBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA STONEWARE PRESS- MOLDED LAMB FIGURE, salt-glazed, hollow form with finely detailed hair, legs, and facial features. Remnants of white paint. Attributed to the pottery of Jacob Eberly (1830-1908) and Daniel Letcher Eberly (1859-1919), Strasburg, VA. Late 19th century. 3 1/4" HOA, 11 1/2" L.
Published: Comstock - The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 281, fig. 5.222.
Provenance: From a New York City collection.
Catalogue Note: Comstock notes that this is the only known stoneware example of the Eberly lamb figure. It was obviously produced from the same mold as the earthenware examples and exhibits the same mold seam running the length of its back. This example features superior detailing because the hollow molding allowed for a better pressing.
