Western America1855 Cover To “Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory”
1855, Cover, Mailed from Sunderland, England to “Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory,” great postal markings, Choice Very Fine.
According to its markings, this stampless, blue paper cover, measuring 3” x 5.25,” addressed to Mrs. J. Ferguson at “Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory, U.S.A.,” was mailed from Sunderland, England on January 16, 1855 and arrived at Liverpool the following day. From there it traveled to Boston, where it arrived on February 24 (“Br. Packet - Feb. 24 - Boston”). There are no further markings after this, leaving us to wonder how it traveled to Utah. Whether it went by sea to San Francisco or overland from Boston, the cover must have reached Utah by one of the private express companies. The green marking in the upper right “19 Cents” must have been applied by a ship in the United States, perhaps the British Packet Boat. This cover is in great condition, including the original red wax seal on the back, has light soiling around the edges, and is open on all sides except the top. This is a great piece of Postal History.
