STAMPED "J.D.HEATWOLE", ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE CANNING JAR, salt glazed, barrel form with medial rings, heavy rings below the ringed rim. Extremely rare scrolled-frame name stamp is lightly struck. John D. Heatwole, Dry River Pottery. 1860-1870. 9" H, 4 3/4" D rim, 6 1/4" D base. Literature: Parallels Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthenware, front cover and p. 90, fig. 168; Kaufman - Heatwole and Suter Pottery, p. 29, fig. 18; and Comstock - Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 327, fig. 6.28. Provenance: Collection of Gail and the late Charlie Lohr, Broadway, VA.
Catalogue Note: This is only the third recorded example of pottery bearing Heatwole's scrolled-frame stamp. Its primary service was as an ink stamp used by Heatwole to mark books from his library. Stan Kaufman illustrated an example of this stamp inked into a book from Heatwole's library on page 14 of his exhibition catalogue referenced above. In addition, this is only the second recorded example of this barrel form canning jar.
