Description
MID-ATLANTIC FRAKTUR, watercolor and ink on paper, birth and baptism certificate, central reserve inscribed in German for Magdalena Maysserin (Mizer), born December 26, 1767, no location or parents given, sponsors Benedict and Magdalena Immhoff, surrounded by scrolling flowers rising from four corner hearts each with an inscription. Modern frame. Probably Pennsylvania, Maryland or Virginia. Second half 18th century. 14" x 11 3/4".

Provenance: Collection of the late Rudolph Evers, Bridgewater, VA.
Purchased at the estate auction of Mary Burwell Buck (1913-1981), Augusta Co, Virginia school teacher.
From her mother Edith F. Hawpe Buck (1871- ), married Samuel Preston Buck (1868- ) April 14, 1909.
From her father James Shields Hawpe (1836-1889), married Mary E. Billingsley (1849-1880) August 11, 1864.
From their father Adam Mizer Hawpe (1804-1880), married Margaret Shields Dunlap Hawpe (1813-1873), May 27, 1830.
Catalogue Note: Several design elements seen on this fraktur are closely related to the works of the unidentified Brocks Gap Artist of Loudoun and Rockingham Co., Virginia. See Paul/HRHS, "Bernhart & Company: Shenandoah Valley Folk Art Fraktur (1774-1850), pp. 88-93.
The Mizer family moved to Augusta Co., VA by around 1792.

Fair condition with small losses at the fold lines, other scattered small losses and tears, small stains.
