Description
South America, Argentina, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lovely but sharp gaucho steel facon knife with an elegant and high quality 75% silver handle and silver sheath. The steel blade is stamped by the maker "LA MOVEDIZA / IND. ARG" and the handle grip is a low relief and etched flower and vine patterning. The sheath has a matching flower motif, with a clip on one side that is stamped "PASTORINO / 800" for securing to a belt. Gauchos considered facons to be more masculine than firearms and were popular for duels of honor, protection, and carried as accessories and symbols of prestige. Size in sheath: 9.75" L x 1.25" W (24.8 cm x 3.2 cm); blade only: 5.25" L x 1" W (13.3 cm x 2.5 cm); silver quality: 75%

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's
