Note: Allan Ramsay (15 October 1686 - 7 January 1758) was a Scottish poet, playwright, and anthologist. His arrival in Edinburgh 1701 introduced him to the Arts and likeminded individuals who helped set up the Jacobite literary society 'The Easy Club'. Publishing poetry in English and Scots, Ramsay's aim was to preserve the past and encourage the appreciation of Scots poetry. The Allan Ramsay Club (among many others) provided a forum for critical analysis of neglected yet vital elements of Scottish literature in the 18th century, covering the crucial period from the Union of 1707 to the revolutionary turmoil of the 1790s.
