J. Carter Signed Cover, W/ S.C. Engraving Signed by 12 Burger & Rehnquist Court Justices!

Two items relating to late twentieth-century American politics and the justice system, including an Inauguration Day cover signed by 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and a Bureau of Engraving and Printing print of the U.S. Supreme Court building signed by 12 U.S. Supreme Court justices of the Burger and Rehnquist Courts.

The lot is comprised of:

1. An envelope signed by 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter (born 1924), as "Jimmy Carter" in the addressee section. A dark green cachet depicting Jimmy Carter's presidential campaign headquarters in Plains, Georgia is found at left. Postmarked on Inauguration Day, January 20, 1977, in Washington, D.C. A cancelled 13-cent U.S. stamp appears at the upper right. The autograph collector's name and address on a label is affixed near the bottom, and it is also stamped on a stock card contained within the envelope. A few light scuffs, else near fine. The envelope measures 6.5" x 3.75."

2. An engraving issued by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing showing the southern exposure of the U.S. Supreme Court building, signed by 12 members of the Burger & Rehnquist Courts, including Warren Burger, Thurgood Marshall, William J. Brennan, Jr., Byron R. White, Harry Blackmun, John Paul Stevens, Lewis F. Powell, Jr., William Rehnquist, Sandra D. O'Connor, David Souter, Anthony Kennedy, and Antonin Scalia. N.d., but ca. early 1990s. Slight blunting to the bottom corners, mentioned just for accuracy. A former collector's light pencil inscription is found verso. Else near fine. 8" x 6."

The signers are, from left to right:

- Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (born 1930), as "Sandra D O'Connor"

- Associate Justice Antonin Scalia (1936-2016), as "Antonin Scalia"

- Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy (born 1936), as "Anthony M. Kennedy"

15th Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court Warren Burger led the court between 1969-1986. Burger's court decisions were not as liberal as his predecessor's, Earl Warren, nor as conservative as his successor's, William Rehnquist. In this way, Burger's court is viewed as transitional. William Rehnquist served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1972-1986, and then as the 16th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1986 until his death. Rehnquist leaned towards conservatism, although he was also known as the “Lone Ranger” because he often adopted his own course.
