Item Details
Description
Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver. Serial #177640, .31 cal, 5" barrel professionally shortened during the period of use, with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces are an overall dull pewter gunmetal gray with an overall smattering of plum, some very lightly scattered oxidation, a few light pits and some minor impact marks near the wedge. The two-line barrel address is evident as is the entire cylinder scene. The loading lever actually shows some nice smoky gray color case-hardening with a bit on the right side of the frame. The trigger guard retains strong trace silver plate, perhaps 30%, the back-strap with a bit less, perhaps 15%. There has been a nice half-moon iron sight fitted at the time of the barrel work. The one piece walnut grip rates otherwise very good, missing a 1/4' chip on its rear right edge. It shows very good original varnish which is only wearing slightly and fits perfectly and is doubtless original to the gun. The gun seems to function loosely mechanically with quite a bit of end shake in the cylinder, all the numbers however are matching including the wedge. Etched on the cylinder, a signature Colt scene, version of a stagecoach holdup, portraying revolver-armed passengers dispatching highwaymen. ** these scenes were added for the sake of decoration & customer appeal, but also as tributes to people & events of historical significance.
