Antique German Metlach Villeroy and Boch 1 Liter capacity pewter lidded Beer Stein Approx. 10 1/4 inch tall weighs just under 3 pounds empty Mold number 2082 Pottery etched Text on lid “ König der Schützen ” ( King of the marksman ) According to Swiss legend an Austrian bailiff named Gessler demanded that homage be paid to his hat which he’d placed atop a pole When Wilhelm Tell refused he was seized and condemned to death He was granted his life on the condition that he demonstrate his skill as an archer by shooting an apple from his son’s head He did that successfully and was later able to escape and kill Gessler sparking a rebellion against Austrian ( Hapsburg ) rule and resulting in the formation of the (Old) Swiss Confederation in 1291. Perfect addition to your own antique German beer stein collection From New Jersey estate

Used: Cleaned and inspected for sale. Body is in very good condition with normal wear for age. No chips or cracks to body, base, or rim. Hinge and strap are tight and operate as intended.
