Description

(Scottish, 1883-1959)

World War II Era View of San Francisco, California, 1941, inscribed lower right "30 December 1941/..perfect days", with a possible self portrait to the far right, ink and ink wash on seamed buff paper, laid on canvas and stretched, 13-1/2 x 104 in.; contact paper laminated wood frame, 16-1/8 x 106-3/4 in.

Provenance: Estate of the Artists James McBey and Marguerite McBey, London, England; by descent in family

Note: During WWI, the McBeys came to the United States. The family relates a story that James McBey was arrested as a spy and questioned when it was reported that he was doing this panoramic sketch of the port of San Francisco. McBey included naval ships in his depiction which apparently was strictly forbidden.A label verso indicates that by 1968, this drawing was in the possession of Arthur J. Loeb, the brother of Marguerite Loeb McBey.
