Ronald Reagan Signed 1st Inauguration Day Cover, with Outstanding Provenance

An Inauguration Day postal cover signed in blue ink by 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) as "Ronald Reagan" in the postage section at upper right. With a cancelled postmark dated January 20, 1981 from Washington, D.C. A cachet at left depicts a portrait of Reagan entitled "Ronald Reagan / 40th President of the United States / January 20, 1981." Near fine. 6.5" x 3.675."

The Reagan signed cover is also accompanied by:

1. A 1p photocopy of a typed letter originally signed by Thomas "Tip" O'Neill, Jr., Speaker of the House of Representatives, dated January 22, 1981, explaining how this Inauguration Day cover was signed. Unevenly trimmed at left.

In part: "On January 20, 1981…[w]hile in the Speaker's Office, he [Reagan] signed fifteen Free Frank Presidential Inauguration covers…The covers were then hand carried to the Post Office Department by Lewis F. Schull and the covers were hand cancelled by authority of Postmaster General William Bulger. The covers were then hand carried to the Speaker's Office. A number of the covers were given to the President and a few retained by the Speaker…"
