A PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE BALUSTER JARS AND COVERS
Item Details
Description
A PAIR OF BLUE AND WHITE BALUSTER JARS AND COVERS
Kangxi
Each painted with a scrolling lotus design between a band of lotus bulbs at the foot and an upright lappet border to the short neck, the domed cover terminating with a blue knop finial.
52cm (20 1/2in) high (4).
Condition
Expect firing imperfections like pitting, burst bubbles and firing cracks. Some light surface scratch. The bases unglazed.

Jar 1: restored all around mouth rim but this does not appear to extend further down than a few millimetres so probably just covering fritting. Surface glaze imperfections and fine scratches throughout. On the body there is a 'potential' hairline crack of up to (16.5cm) long seen under .U.V. lighting. This shows as a very thin independent curving near-vertical line starting from a point around 70mm up from base and ending around 100mm above the start point.

[N.B. This 'linear feature' is seen effectively under U.V. lamp but cannot be located with: the naked eye; utilising a torch; in good daylight conditions; using a x 10 lens or through a smart phone camera lens. The feature certainly cannot be relayed to prospective buyers via a photograph. It is 'possible' this flaw is one within the body of the clay and not on the surface. However it is recorded here to ensure potential buyers are furnished with all information which could be of assistance.]

Cover 1: numerous areas of the rim bear professional restoration. Finial has been stuck and professionally restored. Some glaze imperfections such as areas of glaze resist and burst bubbles. some imperfections on the glaze colour, particularly on the knob. Much circular scratches inside cover around the restored knop in centre and many oxide spots apparent.

Jar 2: mouth rim much fritted and bearing small chips, the biggest approx. 1.5cm long. One side has extensive blue glaze imperfections, characterised by many small white dots.

Cover 2: fritting top of finial. Extensive areas of restoration on the cover rim. A lump of clay and some blue glaze imperfections on the knob occurred during firing. General surface scratching.
