Description
A five-piece group of matching blue and white Japanese bowls with matching designs of pine trees with branches low to the ground.
The thinly potted porcelain blue and white dishes are from an early time in Japanese porcelain production. The cobalt used is a smoky medium blue. The dishes feel soft and look shiny. The designs on the match very well. The foot is unglazed and very white. The base is glazed. Circular marks from the potter’s wheel are visible through the glaze. The dishes vary slightly in depth of cobalt and weight of the dish.
Provenance: The bowls were part of W. Gordon Menzies personal collection. Mr. Menzie’s was the manager and owner of the Crane Gallery in Seattle for many years.
MEASUREMENTS
5 7/8” (14.9 cm) diameter x 1 3/8” (3.4 cm) deep. Weighs 2 lbs 0.4 oz (915 g)
CONDITION
There are no cracks, chips or breaks. There are kiln flaws, such as glaze reserves, black spots, bumps and spots where the blue under glaze were not cleaned off. There is slight wear to the central well on all the bowls.
A decorative matching set of 18th century Japanese bowls that can still be used today.
